Unfortunately, like many businesses in the hospitality industry, it couldn’t survive in its original set-up due to the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
So, let’s dive into the details and relive the journey of Pitt Cue through the Quantity Surveying lens.
The project involved transforming the old East India Company warehouses, which held a Grade II listed status. As you can imagine, this meant adhering to strict requirements while maintaining the historic charm of the building.
The goal was to create a unique restaurant experience centred around a meat-based menu and a dedicated brewery on a mezzanine level. But it wasn’t as straightforward as it sounds.
To bring this vision to life, the team had to navigate complex structural alterations. They had to remove ground beams and hang the building from the first-floor structure to accommodate the desired changes.
The intricacies didn’t end there; the team had to ensure compliance with the building’s historic nature, which affected everything from the routing of the HVAC system to the installation of water wash canopies on the main cook line.
Despite the challenges, the project was a resounding success.
The final result was a masterpiece, boasting a flame grill cooking setup that offered a unique dining experience. The restaurant’s popularity soared, and for the initial few years, it thrived as a vibrant spot in London’s bustling city centre. However, fate had other plans.
The hospitality industry was hit hard by the global pandemic, and Pitt Cue was no exception. The changing dynamics of office work and the uncertainty surrounding regulations severely impacted the footfall and trade of the restaurant.
With many people working from home and a condensed working week in the city, the once-bustling Friday lunchtime atmosphere became a rarity.
Despite its uniqueness and charm, Pitt Cue couldn’t survive the storm.
