More locally in Worthing, the JCA team are tackling a purposeful project—aiding the historic fishing industry. Worthing’s fishing fleet, once a bustling economic driver, has dwindled due to economics, environment and changes of time. Here’s how the project aims to change that:
- Setting up a cold storage room and ice-making facilities to extend the shelf life of fresh catches. Currently a catch lasts for 4 hours- this provides for ‘next day’ sales.
- Seeking proposals for a tractor, allowing fishermen to launch boats regardless of tidal conditions. Providing facility for any time regular launches.
- Revitalising a historic rotunda, transforming it into a hub for selling fish directly to the community. Providing ice and cold storage plus toilet and shower facilities.
The goal is to make fishing in Worthing economically sustainable again, preserving this vital part of local heritage while providing opportunities for future generations. “This initiative brings together community, heritage, and sustainability,” Julian explained, emphasising its potential to inspire similar projects across other coastal towns.
