Julian Church and Associates Limited (JCA) is proud to celebrate 24 years since its founding. Established in 2001 by Julian Church, the company began as a small construction consultancy and has grown into a respected, multi-sector business delivering high-quality projects across the UK and internationally.
Where It All Began
Our first commission came in 2001, a restaurant and bar project named Manhattan at Port Solent. This fit-out included a ground floor bar and a first-floor restaurant and kitchen, created for a private client trading as The Manhattan Bar and Grill. We collaborated with Rory Cashin Design on the scheme, which seated 197 guests and featured premium finishes including leather, granite, and timber.
That same year, we began work with West Sussex County Council on the feasibility of consolidating multiple local offices into one site in Bognor. JCA served as lead technical consultant, helping shape the scope of the project.
Long-Term Partnerships Begin
2001 also marked the start of a lasting relationship with Caffè Nero, beginning with their unit at the Merrill Lynch Financial Centre opposite the Old Bailey. JCA delivered project management, cost consultancy, and planning supervision—a partnership that would grow significantly over the years.
Growth and Expansion (2004–2005)
By 2004, JCA had expanded its team and moved to larger offices in Worthing. We delivered 64 Caffè Nero projects across the UK including sites at two London airports. This period marked a major shift from sole trader beginnings to a fully-fledged consultancy.
In 2005, another Quantity Surveyor joined the team, and JCA achieved ISO 9001 Quality Assurance Certification, which we’ve maintained through annual audits ever since.
Supporting Community & Sport
We’ve always valued giving back. In response to a national radio appeal, JCA sponsored kits for the Rottingdean Village Youth Under-11s, providing home, away and goalkeeper kits. This complemented our earlier sponsorship of Zat Knight at Fulham FC, which began in 2001.
Hospitality, Retail & Pubs (2008–2013)
By 2008, we were delivering Quantity Surveying services for Greene King Pub Company supporting rebrands to their Premium Local specification. In 2009, we were recognised as one of Caffè Nero’s longest-serving suppliers having worked on 150–200 stores.
We expanded into education and sustainability acting as CDM Coordinators for Environment Agency refurbishments in Worthing and Pevensey.
Between 2011–2013, we delivered 20 restaurants for Carluccio’s, including international projects in Dubai and Washington, D.C. We also contributed to the award-winning Eastleigh Outdoor Activities Centre, which earned a BREEAM award for sustainable design.
Expanding Internationally (2015–2017)
In 2015, we began working with Adidas, managing projects across Scandinavia and Europe, including Stockholm, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Oslo and flagship stores in London.
By 2016, we were delivering healthcare projects for Varian, focusing on hospitals and infirmaries. These complex projects required specialist knowledge around ventilation, accessibility and patient care environments.
In 2017, we began a long-term relationship with St Joseph’s Hospice, where work began in Hackney on a variety of spaces including St Michael’s Ward.
Diversification & Resilience (2019–2021)
In 2019, we supported Caffè Nero in Sweden and worked with Burger King to open several stores across the UK.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought challenges, but also new opportunities. Travel paused, many projects were delayed and remote work became the norm. During this time, we began our ongoing partnership with Gaucho, delivering refurbishments and maintaining a retainer relationship.
A Business for Good – B Corp Certification (2022)
In 2022, we proudly achieved B Corp Certification, joining a global movement of businesses committed to purpose, accountability and transparency. The certification recognises our high standards across sustainability, employee well-being, charitable impact and supply chain ethics.
We successfully re-certified in 2025, reaffirming our commitment to using business as a force for good.
Recent Highlights (2023–2024)
In 2023, international work resumed with a project for Le Shuttle Duty Free in Calais. Domestically, we continued delivering educational projects for clients such as Holmewood House School and Horizon Grove Road School in Sutton.
We’re currently working on a three-phase refurbishment of a specialist school in Rochdale, set to complete by Christmas 2025. Our ongoing partnership with Horizon Group reflects our shared values in providing specialist learning environments for young people.
We also continue to support our community, including sponsorship and advisory services for The Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea and our pro bono contribution to the Windsor Gardens Pavilion project in Worthing.
Looking Back – Looking Forward
Over the past 24 years, JCA has proudly delivered impactful projects across Hospitality, Retail, Healthcare, Education, and Community sectors.
From a single restaurant fit-out in 2001 to international retail rollouts, award-winning public facilities, and B Corp recognition, our journey has been defined by quality, integrity and collaboration.
We remain committed to shaping spaces that serve people, communities, and the planet — and we look forward to continuing that journey in the years ahead.
