The Hidden Secrets of Coffee Shop Rollouts: A Game-Changing Approach

Hello coffee shop enthusiasts.

You may think, coffee shop rollouts are all about construction and design, but there’s much more to it than meets the eye.

Let’s start by introducing you to the concept of a rollout.

Think of it as a continuous push forward, where a specific design and brand format are tailored to each individual coffee shop unit. It’s about making the space unique and functional while still maintaining the brand’s identity. The rollout model is an approach that saves time (of redesign), eliminates unnecessary costs, and ensures a smooth successful project & brand expansion.

Managing time is crucial in the coffee shop rollout process. With our experience and an already considered & practised design, we’ve come to know the typical time scale for each unit. For example, a standard job would take around four weeks, but add another week for a new shop front and an additional week for a new interlinking staircase between floors. We’ve learned to anticipate and plan accordingly.

Let’s consider one of our former success stories. Café Nero, a consistent client in the coffee shop industry, who became a regular partner for us, back in 2001 when they had less than 100 units. While we don’t work directly with them anymore, our last project took us all the way to Sweden, where we successfully rolled out 10 new units. Through forming relationships and making connections, we expanded our reach to different countries. Café Nero wanted to enter the market in Sweden, it was a natural progression to use our expertise there for them.

Working in Sweden presented its own set of challenges, including different interpretations of construction safety regulations. But in many ways, it wasn’t too different from working across different regions in the UK. Travel and local regulations are always factors to consider, but the end goal remains the same – delivering a high-quality coffee shop experience.

For those of you just starting out in the coffee shop industry, here’s some valuable advice. Start small and learn from each unit you open. The first, second, and third units will teach you valuable lessons about your brand proposition and target audience. Understanding your operation and creating an efficient customer flow is key. Consider factors like footfall, seating arrangements and even impulse purchases.

As coffee shop experts, we’ve honed our skills over 25 years in the industry. We’ve worked closely with Café Nero and other brands, refining the art of coffee shop design and construction. We’ve developed a deep understanding of how to optimise operational efficiency and create spaces that captivate customers.

So next time you step into a coffee shop, take a moment to appreciate the thought and expertise that went into its design. It’s not just about serving a great cup of coffee; it’s about creating an unforgettable experience from the moment you walk through the door. Embrace the rollout model, consider your repeat brand identity but also individual local design requirements for your projects and take your coffee shop ventures to new heights.
