Community projects have the power to bring people together, create positive change and transform spaces for the better. In 2014/15 we were part of a remarkable award-winning project that took place in Eastleigh, where a waterside centre was rebuilt from the ground up. This project not only revitalized the facility but also had a profound impact on the local community. Here we discuss the story behind this transformative endeavour.

Setting the Stage:
We were introduced via a Brighton architect to the scheme. The aim was to completely renovate the waterside centre, incorporating classrooms, changing spaces, toilets, and even a small kitchen cafeteria. Additionally, a separate building was constructed for boat storage. The vision was to create an outdoor waterside centre within a country park, offering the local community a place to enjoy the outdoors and the water.
From Derelict to 21st Century:
The existing facilities were in a state of disrepair, almost derelict. However, the project team took on the challenge and embarked on transforming the centre into a modern, sustainable space. The process began at the feasibility stage, where budgets were determined. The buildings were a mix of stone, timber, and concrete, with various roofing and glazing configurations. The team meticulously prepared budgets, managed the tender process and oversaw the construction until completion.
Navigating Challenges:
During the project, an unforeseen hurdle emerged when the contracted company went into administration, nearing the end of the project. However, the team handled and oversaw the completion of the project with the contractor in administration, ensuring that the project was still completed successfully. We liaised with administrators, resolved any remaining defects, and finalized the accounts.
The People Behind the Project:
When discussing the end users of the facility, it became apparent that the local community was at the heart of the project. While the Council served as the client, the ultimate customers were the people who would utilize the centre – individuals seeking recreational activities such as boating, fishing, or simply enjoying the natural surroundings. Community, for the project team, extended beyond the physical location of the centre.
Embracing the Spirit of Community:
Community holds tremendous importance to us all at Julian Church and Associates, evident in our various community-driven initiatives. From engaging in volunteer football coaching, and supporting local youth participation in sport, to supporting local healthcare, we seek to actively contribute to making a positive impact. We prioritize local employment, local spending, and supporting local causes, all to create a better community for everyone.
The Impact:
The Waterside Centre’s transformation garnered recognition, winning design awards for its sustainable construction and secure design. The renovated facility now boasts 21st-century amenities, including modern changing rooms, teaching spaces, a café, and secure storage. The satisfied client has led to continued collaboration with the same project team, highlighting the success of the project and the positive outcomes it has generated.
